Mihalis Kalkanis' Group
Ethnic Jazz Group
Michalis Kalkanis. One of the most interesting, daring and creative double bass players of the new generation of Greek jazz musicians and not only! He comes from a musical family and, in addition to participating in the most important bands of its kind, he is experimenting successfully, offering us unpredictable music. He combines electronic music with the traditional song of ... his grandmother and makes field recordings of religious ceremonies of immigrants, giving us an amalgam of sounds of the world on the album of World Echoes in Athens. His band was selected as "The New Music Proposal" of the Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival 2018, while in 2019 he participated with a special appearance at the Summer Nostos Festival of the SNFCC. In the same year, he appeared in other festivals in Greece and Cyprus and his band was chosen first among 300 nominations to appear at the Fira B Festival in Spain. A leading moment in the course of the band so far, are two performances at the Small Theater of Epidaurus (July 24 & 25, 2020), where the band with its original and authentic sound, traveled the audience from jazz and ambient to the traditional and world music, in two separate concerts, which were considered one of the best musical experiences of the summer. Recently, the Athens Concert Hall included the Mihalis Kalkanis Group in a series of unexpected interviews in the field of arts, sciences, and intellect, and presented the relevant podcast, thus prefacing the band's new album, which was recorded live at its venue and is coming very soon.
